Experience Gap Match™

By Olivia Friedman·June 18, 2026 at 4:44 PM CT

One of the greatest misconceptions in hiring is the belief that a resume must match a job description word for word. In reality, organizations often hire for demonstrated capability, pattern recognition, judgment, leadership, adaptability, and the ability to resolve problems. The challenge is that many applicants focus on job titles while employers are searching for transferable experience.

An Experience Gap Match™ occurs when an individual has already performed the underlying functions of a role without carrying the exact title. A Navy Hospital Corpsman may possess healthcare operations experience, compliance experience, training experience, documentation experience, technology implementation experience, and leadership experience, even though none of those words appear in the job title. The experience exists. The translation is what is missing.

Many professionals underestimate their value because they view their careers through departmental labels. Employers frequently evaluate through outcomes. A person who coordinated stakeholders, prepared reports, improved adoption rates, trained users, supported executives, and managed operational activities may already possess project management, change management, business transformation, and program support experience regardless of whether the title reflected those responsibilities.

The modern workforce increasingly rewards adjacent expertise. Organizations face challenges that rarely fit neatly inside a single discipline. Healthcare intersects with technology. Technology intersects with cybersecurity. Cybersecurity intersects with governance. Governance intersects with risk management. Professionals who have operated across multiple environments often possess broader perspective than candidates whose experience remained confined to a single lane.

The Experience Gap Match™ framework encourages individuals to inventory what they have actually accomplished rather than focusing exclusively on what they were called. Responsibilities, outcomes, measurable achievements, leadership activities, problem-solving efforts, certifications, education, volunteer work, entrepreneurial ventures, military service, and lived experience all contribute to capability.

Employers frequently complain about talent shortages while overlooking candidates whose experience maps directly to business needs. Job seekers frequently dismiss themselves because they do not satisfy every line item on a posting. The gap is often smaller than either side realizes.

Before assuming you are unqualified, conduct an honest assessment. Review the requirements. Identify the underlying competencies. Compare those competencies to your own experiences. You may discover that what appears to be an experience gap is actually an experience match waiting to be translated.

Executive Observation™

The largest gap in many careers is not capability. It is vocabulary. Individuals often possess the experience. They simply have not learned how to articulate it.
